THE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: YOUR PROPOSAL IN TWO PAGES OR LESS You have completed all of the requirements for your RFP, and are almost ready to submit it. But, youââ¬â¢re wondering if you need to include an executive summary. While not all RFPs call for an executive summary, some do ââ¬âand some will even provide you a template for the summary. However, if the RFP does not specify any guidelines or requirements, you may still decide that including an executive summary could enhance your prospects. The question is, though, what should your executive summary include? Here are a few tips to help you craft the most effective RFP executive summary possible. What is an executive summary? Letââ¬â¢s start with what an executive summary is not. It is not a string of bullet points or a cut and paste job, however tempting. While it should be the last thing you write, it should not be a mere afterthought. Like your cover letter, the executive summary should be a positive reflection of your organization. A good executive summary is a condensed version of your proposal. It provides an overview of the proposalââ¬â¢s contents without repeating details verbatim. The executive summary may well be the first thing a reviewer reads but it is not an introduction. It should capture the readerââ¬â¢s attention but strike a tone appropriate for your audience. The first sentence or two should convince the reader that the summary, and what follows, is worth their while. For example, a service provider responding to an RFP might lead with something like, ââ¬Å"Quick. Reliable. Secure. Thatââ¬â¢s our promise to you.â⬠Then, what follows would describe how the proposed deliverables demonstrate these qualities. A good executive summary is concise, with short paragraphs. The shorter the better. One page should suffice. More than two pages is too much and risks losing the reader. Short paragraphs provide white space, allowing the reader to move quickly through the text. Consider the following examples from incontextdesign.com. Like Goldilocks, youââ¬â¢ll want your spacing to be ââ¬Ëjust right.ââ¬â¢ A good executive summary stands on its own. Most persons reading the summary will no doubt be reviewers required to read the entire proposal. However, should anyone read only the summary, they should finish it with an understanding of all the proposalââ¬â¢s key elements. In sum, the executive summary deserves your time and effort, should you need, or choose, to do one. Consider writing a draft and letting it rest overnight. (You know, like you did with that long, angry email.) Fresh eyes provide a whole different perspective, highlighting points you may have overlooked and focusing your mind on whatââ¬â¢s most important. An hereââ¬â¢s one final tip: Consider letting someone else write a first draft. Like the proofreader who has never seen a draft can spot things the writer or editor missed, someone who has never seen your draft can provide an even fresher pair of eyes. One thing would be certain is that the Mothers Day flower given to the mothers would be included in the capsule. Next the dress made by the inmates would be included for two reasons. The first reason is to show that the inmates did not have to be in prison uniforms for Mothers Day and second to show how important Mothers Day is to the inmates. The clothing they wear symbolizes their excitement about Mothers Day and the hard work the inmates put into the preparation of the important day. A good portion of the inmates in the minimum-security prison are normal women that were either in the wrong place at the wrong time or made a mistake in life. Yet when they are with their families on Mothers Day it looks seems to be as if the prison doesnt truly exist, do to the amount of joy filling the visiting room. Is there a common element or common denominator in the histories of the inmates? Is there anything to be learned from their stories? The common element that happens to be in the histories of the inmates is that they are not hard core criminals. If anything most of them are innocent, and only guilty of helping a love one with no idea of what was happening. In fact the main thing said by the families of the inmates is why should my love one be in here when there are worse criminals in the world. Hence, in this murky situation, the national identity ends up being a negotiation between the law and the custom, which influences HR. One main problem to Muslims is that they do not benefit from unity building exercises because existing stereotypes condemn Muslims to retrograde positions in politics, religion and gender. Though Islamophobia is relatively new in North America where the numbers of Muslims are increasing steadily, Muslims suffer open discrimination and prejudice in public domains (Lalami 20-21). In case the US society was serious in combating Islamophobia, US Muslims, government and U.S. intelligent agencies would take immediate pr oactive steps in promoting balanced and accurate view of Islam. Moreover, Muslims would have to learn to work with the system for them to survive in the West while at the same time non-Muslims have to show great respect for the religion; however, this remains a huge challenge to HR. Through such cooperation, it is possible to envision a thriving multicultural US community in the future within the country. Moreover, the notion of good Muslim citizen suggests that Islamophobia can be dealt with through religious Multiculturalism and tolerance; however, it is hard to eradicate it by simple religious tolerance because Islamophobia is linked to US foreign policy (Jung 122).
